Frequently Asked Questions

+ What is My Therapist Online?

My Therapist Online was established in 2016, we are a service run by therapists. We find you the right therapist to treat your individual needs.

All our therapists are fully qualified and offer confidential, convenient sessions online using live video calls (using a platform of your choice such as Skype, Zoom or FaceTime).

My Therapist Online makes therapy available anytime, anywhere, through a computer, tablet or mobile phone.

+ Why Choose My Therapist Online?

Unlike some other therapy platforms, My Therapist Online is run by qualified therapists. Every request for help is read, reviewed and matched by a qualified and experienced professional.

We have no waiting lists or waiting rooms, and can typically ensure you meet with your therapists within a week of registering your interest.

Each of the My Therapist Online therapists have been selected after a rigorous application process. This allows us to be confident in the quality of the therapy that our clients receive and ensure that it meets the highest standards.

Our therapists are all qualified CBT Therapists, Psychologists and counsellors who have years of experience working in the NHS and privately with a range of difficulties from mild to moderate to complex.

Many of our therapists have specialist training in a range of therapeutic approaches that have the best evidence base for a range of difficulties. Our therapists receive regular clinical supervision.

+ What is therapy (psychotherapy)?

Therapy (psychotherapy) is the process of talking to a qualified therapist to develop helpful thinking and coping skills. It is designed to treat mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, trauma.

There are different types of therapy and depending on their clinical training each therapist may define therapy in a different way. However, all therapy exists to improve a person’s mental health.

Therapy provides a person with a space that lets them talk about their problems and feelings in a confidential and safe environment.

By talking through our problems, we are better able to understand them ourselves and hopefully, with professional and skilled guidance, better able to make changes to improve our lives.

Most people have between 6-8 sessions.

You can choose to stop therapy at any point.

+ Once I have registered who will be helping me?

Once you have completed the My Therapist Online Registration document we will identify 1-4 therapists who best match your needs, with a stronger recommendation of the best therapist for you.

We will send you an email with links to those therapist clinical profiles for you to look at and make your own decision who you would like therapy with.

Different therapists have different approaches and areas of expertise, so it's important to find the right person who can achieve the best results for you.

We have found that we are able to provide a successful match most of the time; however, if you start the process and you feel your therapist isn't a good fit for you, you are welcome to ask to be matched to a different therapist.

Please note - People wanting treatment for Bipolar disorder, it is best managed by video therapy if the person is also engaged with a psychiatrist and compliant with medication.

+ Why do people choose online therapy rather than in-clinic therapy?

The most common reasons people want the convenience of online therapy include:

  • You don’t have to travel, sit in a waiting room or sit on a long waiting list to speak to a therapist
  • You can access therapy from anywhere, from the comfort or your home or wherever you feel most comfortable.
  • You can schedule therapy sessions for times that are most convenient for you, including evenings and weekends.
  • People can access the right therapist and type of therapy for their need despite living in rural locations or far away from a specialist.
  • You can access therapy even if you struggle to leave the house.
  • It is extremely discreet so you don’t have to tell anyone

The convenience of online therapy also makes it a lot easier for people to start therapy who might not otherwise.

Please note - while the service may have similar benefits to in-clinic, it's not capable of substituting for traditional face-to-face therapy in every case.

If at any point during treatment your therapist believes that, in their professional opinion, that you would be more suitable for in-clinic therapy, they will discuss this with you and support you to make the best plan for your needs.

+ When is the best time to access therapy?

Don’t wait until crisis point before accessing help.

Therapy is about talking to a trained professional about things that are happening in your life and exploring changes to the way that you think and behave to help you feel better. This is something that most people would probably benefit from.

Your difficulties are worth it. No matter how minimal they feel.

If something is affecting you and preventing you from being the best version of yourself, then it is worth reaching out and asking a professional to help guide you through these road blocks to access a path towards being happy again.

Online therapy can be more flexible than in-clinical appointments, so you can scale the appointments up or down depending on your needs.

+ How does live video therapy work?

Real-time online video therapy is the exact same process as in-person counselling or psychotherapy:

  • You are matched with a therapist qualified with the right skills and experience to best meet your needs
  • You meet regularly with your therapist using a live video platform of your choice, such as Skype, Zoom or FaceTime
  • Instead of talking in the same room, you talk over video call on your laptop or tablet.
  • You receive best practice treatment that works to help you recover from your problems typically between 6-8 sessions.

The aim of video therapy is to provide you with a psychological consultation in the same way as attending an in-clinic appointment.

Through Skype, Zoom or FaceTime you will be able interact with the therapist in much the same way as when you attend a consulting room. Instead of arriving for an appointment, you simply call the therapist online.
