Ian scott

Chartered Counselling Psychologist

Ian Scott is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist, having qualified in 1999, he has over 20 years NHS experience in Berkshire and Devon.

Ian has worked extensively with people of all ages who might be experiencing anxiety, depression, OCD, personality difficulties and complex mental health difficulties. Ian has also worked with addictions.

Ian has extensive experience working in the mental health of older adults, dealing with loss, grief, life adjustment issues, and works with individuals, couples and families.

Words from Ian - “I realise that therapy can be a new and unusual approach for people. I often work with folk who are finding things hard, and need a neutral form of support. I can offer direct support, teaching and practice in cognitive and behavioural techniques, or relaxation and mindfulness ideas to help. The goals that a person wants to work towards might be crystal clear to them, or they might refine these as we work together.

I use CBT, but also draw on other training I have. I am qualified in DBT so use a lot of mindfulness, relaxation, and emotion regulation ideas.

Every client has a story to tell, their recent problems or the complex life issues that they face. Having a chance to share that with someone is a good start, and I am confident that working on a problem is a way to resolve a problem. I'll support you the best I can.”

What is DBT?

Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is an evidence based psychotherapy that is based on CBT, but it is specially adapted for people who feel emotions very intensely.

The aim of DBT is to help you:

  • Understand and accept your difficult feelings

  • Learn skills to more effectively manage your feelings

  • Become able to make positive changes in your life

DBT is based upon the biosocial theory of mental illness and is the first therapy that has been experimentally demonstrated to be generally effective in treating borderline personality disorder (BPD).

DBT skills training is effectively integrated into treatment with a goal of emotion regulation and improved distress tolerance.

It has been a highly effective treatment for a wide variety of problems including

  • depression

  • complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD)

  • parenting

  • borderline personality disorder (BPD)

  • self-harm

  • eating disorders, specifically binge eating disorder and bulimia

  • anxiety

DBT combines CBT techniques for:

  • emotion regulation

  • reality-testing

  • concepts of distress tolerance

  • acceptance

  • mindful awareness
